Presentation Title: Interspecies Justice, Self-Determination and Liminality Abstract: Liminal animals – the animals who live around us but not in our homes such as pigeons, foxes, racoons, badgers, magpies, and so on – are typically more self-determining than domesticated animals. This is because liminal animals have more control over their day-to-day lives and are more able to negotiate the many dangers and challenges that go with freedom. In this talk, I defend the claim that human-driven domestication is inherently at odds with animals’ rights to self-determination. I further argue that we have a duty to (1) stop bringing more domesticated animals into existence, and (2) create avenues for existing domesticated animals to transition to liminality.
