Curiosity and creativity in secondary computing

Activity: Public engagement and outreachPublic speaking engagements

Description

We have evidence that too many pupils, particularly girls, find secondary computing unengaging, which leads to low take up of GCSE computer science and can sometimes present challenges to teachers' behaviour management skills. Prof Berry considers some of the reasons for this, both in terms of what we teach and how we teach it. He proposes that we rethink our approach, to do more to encourage pupils' curiosity about computing, to see its relevance to their lives and careers, and to emphasise creativity in the subject. He demonstrates a few programming projects that might help with this, and invites participants to share their experience of what has worked for them.
