Evolutionary mismatch - the wonders and limits of human adaptability | Danny Longman | Ep.27

Activity: Public engagement and outreachPublic speaking engagements

Description

Our ancestors evolved for millions of years living in natural habitats from savannahs to forests. Recently, and in the blink of an evolutionary eye, our environments changed - industrialisation has brought urbanisation and city living to many of us. This creates an 'evolutionary mismatch' - the world we live in is not the world we're designed for. What stresses does that bring to our minds and bodies? How well do we cope with them, and how can we measure our ability, or lack of ability, to thrive in supoptimal environments?

I talk about all this and more with Dr Danny Longman of Loughborough University, whose research is at the cutting edge of understanding how people adapt to the stresses and strains of (1) modern life and (2) self imposed feats of endurance.
