Description

Wandering with a camera – the body in somatic landscape screendance

Two-day intensive for MA Choreography COMMA [2023-2025 cohort], a collaborative degree betwee Codarts , University for the Arts Rotterdam and Fonty's School of Applied Sciences, Tilburg (NL).

During this two-day workshop at Fontys Dance Academy, we will explore site specific screendance making as a collaborative embodied wandering practice. Site-specific screendance couples two contemporary dance forms: site-specific dance—a choreographic process wherein movement is generated in response to a specific site—and screendance, a hybridization of cinematography and choreography wherein the relationship between the dancer and the filmmaker constitute an improvisational duet.

After familiarising ourselves with foundations of capturing the body in the frame in the studio we will embark on journeying as embodied practices of movement and cultural exchange by being-in-place. Wandering excursions will focus sensitivities to the environment and capture the atmosphere and rhythms of the city through movement from both, bodies and cameras.
Facilitating the creation of dance scores with the camera as a moving partner, we will discover: Improvising body to site, body to body, body to camera, as well as filming through a somatic camera.

Each day will offer contextual considerations from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on practices and theories including, embodied knowing, emplacement, somatic movement practices, site-specific choreography, walking practice, screendance and choreographic editing.
