Description
The person-centred field has always had a desire to contribute towards a more socially-just world. For many therapists, this commitment to social justice is realised through trying to ensure that our practice is non-discriminatory and embodies such principles as valuing diversity and promoting inclusivity. Carl Rogers and his colleagues took this one step further by trying to address macro sociopolitical problems through person-centred practices and principles, such as encounter groups in apartheid South Africa. In this presentation, I will extend an understanding of how person-centred theory, research, and practice—as well as work from the wider therapeutic field—has the potential to contribute significantly to a more socially just society. This presentation is based on material for my latest publication, Psychology at the Heart of Social Change: Developing a Progressive Vision for Society (Policy Press, 2023).Estimated audience numbers (if applicable)
