Citizenship Education in the Context of European Values: A Network Overview

The Citizenship Education in the Context of European Values (CitEdEv) project is an Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Network which brings together experts from 28 institutions from across 19 European countries concerned with and committed to developing children’s and young people’s active citizenship in line with fundamental European values.

Its principal ambition is to make citizenship education relevant to children and young people who are anxious and concerned about their futures in the face of populism, xenophobia, divisive nationalism, discrimination, fake news and misinformation, as well as the challenge of radicalisation. Such issues are even more pressing in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, which significantly impacted on young people’s transitions to adulthood and future lives. The programme will run from 2021 to 2024. Through a series of partnership seminars and conferences, the Network will promote and foster a common dialogue on the principles and practice of citizenship education that enhances and embeds European values in the face of significant challenges to these values.

The Network will operationalise the Paris Declaration of March 17 2015 agreed by EU Education Ministers and Commissioner Navracsics promoting citizenship and common values through education, which identified the ‘urgent need to cooperate and coordinate, to exchange experiences, and to ensure that the best ideas and practices can be shared throughout the European Union. We will engage extensively with policy makers at European and national as well as at inter- and trans-national levels, civil society organisations, particularly those focusing on youth democratic education and those in which young people are directly represented and participate.
