The Psychological Impact of Mandated Shunning in High-Control Groups

Activity: Talk or presentation for an academic audienceInvited talk for an academic audience

Description

This seminar will be based on the speakers' research, which was recently published in two papers, about individuals who have been shunned from the Jehovah’s Witnesses community and those who were in a position to shun others. First, they will present key themes from the experiences of those shunned by the community, from reasons for and consequences of religious shunning, through the public announcement of formal shunning, to the culture of the religious community. The research highlights the individual's journey from being a member to leaving the community as a multifaceted experience, influenced by several factors, which has a detrimental impact on their wellbeing. The speakers further identify areas of development within the Serious Crime Act 2015 and propose that there is scope to interpret the law broadly to include instances of people shunned from the Jehovah’s Witnesses community.
