Description
This talk put forward and explores the idea of ‘domestics of performance’: I speak of ‘domestics’ to suggest that the set of activities associated with organizing, maintaining and inhabiting a house constitute a category in its own right, and that, as much as the organizing, maintaining and inhabiting a polis, this category is not a given, but a field of struggle and imagination. I propose to think of the ‘domestics’ as an operational and discursive field for reflecting on performance as a technique figuring ways of living and working together not (only) in terms of democratic consensus, but rather in terms of proximity, organization of material subsistence and modes of dwelling, in time and space. This proposal has to do with a necessity, which I feel strongly, to claim the stakes of performance as a laboratory for social reproduction, as well as a site of production, crucially holding that these two concepts are in fact not at all separated, but intimately connected, integral to each other. With this idea, I am not so interested to address ‘domestic performances’ – performances happening in private houses, or valorizing the domestic dimension over the public sphere – but rather in gestures which uncouple the idea of ‘home’ from the realm of private life and make it an instrument to think and build public life. I am also interested in how this might help reconfiguring the very idea of home, which I propose to understand as a structure of affective intelligibility and recognition in which co-existence might be imagined.Period | 13 Apr 2018 |
