DescriptionAustralia’s first conference on the topic of forced marriage starts on Monday at the UTS Faculty of Law.

Two of the speakers are from the United Kingdom, where the first prosecution since forced marriage was criminalised has just been completed. The mother of a Pakistani British girl was sent to jail.

There is a growing chorus of voices in the UK, from within some of the cultural groups where forced marriage occurs, demanding it be dealt with.

And bipartisan political concern in Australia. But there is debate about which approaches work best, so that young women feel safe to come forward, and act against the wishes of their families.
