Title Understanding Mandated Shunning as Coercive Control: A Call for Awareness and Change Degree of recognition International Media name/outlet Youtube Media type Web Duration/Length/Size 30min Country/Territory United Kingdom Date 29/04/25 Description In this talk, I shared insights from our emerging research into mandated shunning—a practice used by high-control groups to punish individuals who question or leave. Drawing from my background as a counselling psychologist and academic, I explained how mandated shunning functions as a form of psychological abuse, similar in structure to domestic coercive control. I spoke about the devastating impact on mental health, including isolation, grief, and complex PTSD, and discussed the early patterns emerging from our qualitative interviews with survivors, therapists, legal professionals, and advocates. We aim to build awareness, inform policy, and push for mandated shunning to be recognised as a human rights violation and a form of abuse under UK law.
