Personal profile

Biography

Since 2016 I have been Professor of Human Resource Development at the University of Roehampton Business School I am editor-in-chief of the Taylor and Francis journal Human Resource Development International. From 2014-2017 she was Principal Investigator for the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Seminar Series “Challenging Gendered Media (Mis)representations of Women Professionals and Leaders.”

I am currenlty working with Dr Linda Perriton, University of Stirling, on a British Academy of Management funded project examiing the visibility of gender and diversity on the management education curriculum.

My research interests have emerged from my PhD research in management learning and education. With Dr Valerie Stead, Lancaster University, I have contributed to the development of gendered understandings of leadership learning,  With Valerie Stead I have conducted qualitative research and narrative interviews with women leaders, resulting in scholarly articles in journals such as Management Learning and Leadership including the research monograph Women’s Leadership (2009). With Gareth Edwards, Marian Iszatt-White, and Doris Schedlitzki, I co-edited a special issue of Management Learning, “Critical and Alternative Approaches to Leadership Learning and Development” (2013), and an issue of Advances in Developing Human Resources titled “Using Creative Techniques in Leadership Learning and Development” (2015).

Current research projects include an examination of the mobilization of textual and visual representations of women’s leadership in the media. This has led to the publication in 2018 of the Organization Studies paper "Constructing women's leadership representatino in the UK press during a time of financial crisis: gender capitals and dialectical tensions". Other projects include collaborations with Sarah Robinson and Ron Kerr focused on the development of critical hermeneutic and visual methods, leading to papers published in Management Learning and book chapters published in The Routledge Companion to Visual Organization and in Exploring Moran's Metaphors: Theory, Research and Practice in Organization Studies

I regularly present my research at national and international conferences, I am an academic fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a Fellow of the Leadership Trust Foundation in the U.K. and visiting Professor at Huddersfield University Business School.
