Personal profile

Biography

I have developed an original body of research in the field of gender and trade unions in a European comparative perspective, drawing on feminist literature, industrial relations studies and social movements literature. I mobilize gender as a key concept to reflect on union participation, to discuss the under-representation of women and other minority groups within the trade union movement and, more recently, to question the policies and legal mobilizations led by unions to fight gender discrimination. Over the years, I have progressively enlarged my reflections on how gender questions the apparently neutral concepts and categories used by “mainstream disciplines” like industrial relations studies and legal studies, addressing both the invisibility of women (and other minority groups) and the under-evaluation of their interests. However, as I support feminist views on the capacity trade unions have to bringing about transformative social and political change, I have more recently turned my attention to the understanding of trade unions’ mobilizations to advance equality, whether using legal or non legal repertoires of action. Combining comparative and socio-historical approaches, I have engaged in extensive fieldwork in France, Hungary and the UK, which led to considerably enhance my methodological skills, especially qualitative analysis and comparative analysis. I have an extensive experience in leading collective research projects. Since 2005, I have co-coordinated or directed 7 research projects, including one large scale European project that lasted for 3 years and involved fieldwork in 3 European countries.
