David Hargreaves is Professor of Education and Froebel Research Fellow, and has previously held posts in the Schools of Psychology and Education at the Universities of Leicester, Durham and the Open University. He is also Visiting Professor of Research in Music Education at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Adjunct Professor at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. He is a Chartered Psychologist and Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He was Editor of Psychology of Music 1989-96, Chair of the Research Commission of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) 1994-6, and is currently on the editorial boards of 10 journals in psychology, music and education. In recent years he has spoken about his research at conferences and meetings in various countries on all 5 continents. He has been keynote speaker at the Annual Conference of the BPS, and gave a TEDX 2011 Warwick presentation (view here) on 'Musical Fingerprints'. He has appeared on BBC TV and radio as a jazz pianist and composer, and is organist in the East Cambridgeshire Methodist church circuit. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary D.Phil, Doctor Honoris Causa, by the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts in the University of Gothenburg, Sweden in recognition of his 'most important contribution towards the creation of a research department of music education' in the School of Music and Music Education in that University.
His main research and teaching interests are in developmental and social psychology and arts education, particularly music. He has published research on cognitive and social development in children and adolescents; creativity and psychological testing; development of gender roles; childrens' drawing; experimental aesthetics; computers in music education; development of musical preference and style sensitivity; peer collaboration in musical composition: his books have been translated into 15 languages. Current projects include creativity, autonomy and well-being in early childhood; the assessment of musical identities; creativity, imagination and jazz improvisation; musical development. This research has been supported by bodies including ESRC (2 grants from Psychology and 2 from Education panel), the Leverhulme Trust, the Froebel Educational Institute, the Nuffield Foundation, the Leicester - Loughborough Universities joint research fund, PRS and PPL Ltd., the Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), the Teacher Training Authority (TTA), and the British Academy.
David has supervised 44 MPhil/PhD students through to successful completion, and is currently supervising 5 internal and 2 external students.
