Del Loewenthal is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapy and Counselling, and formerly Founding Director of the Research Centre for Therapeutic Education, Convener of the Doctoral Programmes in Psychotherapy, Counselling in the Department of Psychology at the University of Roehampton. He has been Visiting Professor at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, and formerly (2004-2007) at University of Surrey, Guildford.

Prior to taking up his appointment in what is now the department of Psychology at the University of Roehmapton in August 2004, Del was Reader in the School of Education at the University of Surrey. He has received Fellowships to Japan, Europe and North America where he carried out a W.K. Kellogg Faculty Fellowship on problem-based learning.

After moving to Roehampton in 2004, Del has overseen the development of four key training programmes - the UKCP validated MSc/PsychD in Psychotherapy and Counselling (2005); the UKCP validated BSc in Integrative Counselling (2005); the BPS accredited PsychD in Counselling Psychology (2007) and most recently the Post-Graduate Certificate and Post-Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Care which is based on the government's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme (2008). He is also responsible for an associated IAPT Research Unit, which has received external funding of over £300,000. Del also directs the Prisons Psychological Therapies Research Unit which is the leader of European research bids worth 320K Euros.

Del has been on the UKCP register since 1996 (Analytic Section, Philadelphia Association) and a member of the UKCP Research Committee since 1999, including as founding Chair (1999-2004). Since 2004, he has directed the UKCP Research Unit at Roehampton which has to date received over £100,000 in external funding. He has also been a member of the UKCP Registration of Psychotherapy Advisory Group (2002-2004, Chair, Lord Alderdice), a founding member of the UKCP Psychotherapeutic Counselling Committee and has represented UKCP on committees such as the Royal College of Psychiatry's Gender Identity Working Group [2003-]. He is also a former Chair of the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association [1998-2005] and is currently Chair of their Research Committee and Chair of UKCP's Universities Training Council Research Committee.

Del has also been an external examiner on numerous courses, made various media appearances (including on BBC Radio 4 World At One, ITV News and Radio 5) chaired validation panels at Oxford, Edinburgh, Brighton, Exeter, Queens University, Belfast/UEL and in 2007 was made an honorary fellow of the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association. programnes in Psychotherapy,

Del obtained his first degree in Management Science at the University of Bradford (1969) and his MSc in Labour Studies (1970) and PhD on 'Productivity, Involvement and the Person who Works' (1979) at the University of Sussex. He also has a BA (Hons) in Photography and Multimedia (2000) from the University of Westminster. He trained at the Philadelphia Association (London) in Analytic Psychotherapy (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, [UKCP]) and is also a Chartered Counselling Psychologist (BPS) and HPC Registered.

These are broadly on the implications of continental philosophy for professional practice, theory and research. This includes such areas as:

• Principal Investigator, UK, Phototherapy Europe: Learning and Healing through Phototherapy; funded by EU [Leonardo da Vinci] grant (2009-2011) - including empirical research on brief therapy in schools in Greater London and the South East.
• Principal Investigator, Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Research Unit [2008-2010] - Psychological Therapies in Primary Care: Evaluation of an NHS service based on the principles of 'Improving Access to Psychological Therapies' (with Naomi Spokes and Sarah Buchanan); and To conduct a joint research programme into the scope for achieving IAPT outcomes for people with anxiety and depressive disorders from Black Minority Ethnic (BME) communities with specific reference to people from Bengali, Urdu, Tamil and Somali speaking communities in a London borough.'
