Research interests

I am a translator and a comparatist with a special interest in the social, cultural and philosophical aspects of translation. My main interests are in:

-          Translation and film: In my publications, I examine the role of translation in shaping film as an art form and its contribution to cinema’s universal popularity and critical recognition.

-          Translation and the creative industries: My work in this new research field helps to map out the use of translation in the creative economy and to develop new conceptual and methodological tools in order to investigate it.

-          Translation and globalisation: I am interested in the role of translation as an infrastructure of globalisation and, conversely, in the impact that globalisation has on translation as a concept and a practice. I have recently co-edited The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Globalization (2021).

-          Translation and authenticity: Underlying all the above research is an interest in philosophical implications of translation as a form of textual and cultural transformation that, according to some, distances us from so-called “authentic” ways of being, while for others it brings us ever closer to them.

Professional affiliations

Teaching

I teach modules on translation theory and practice including specialised translation, subtitilng and transcreation. I regularly train new subtitlers and translators in the English-Greek combination. Between 2014-19, I was Programme Convener of Roehampton's postgraduate courses in translation, accessibility, and intercultural communication.

Currently, I supervise a small number of PhD theses related to film subtitling, the translation industry, and accessible filmmaking. I welcome new proposals for PhD research in any of my areas of expertise.
