I am a choreographer, writer, director and teacher, working between academic and professional dance contexts, interested in the processes and practices of making movement based performance. I also work as a Gestalt/existential psychotherapist and enquiries from both fields are integrated into practice based research projects.
My career stretches back to the 1960s when I was a ballet dancer and the 1970s when I was co founder of X6 Dance Space in London and co-editor of New Dance Magazine. In the 1980s I was artistic director of Extemporary Dance Theatre; and in the 1990 worked with Phoenix Dance Company and Candoco Dance Company while performing and producing her own shows such as Virginia Minx at Play (1992). In 1997 I was awarded a PhD and published a book, Yes? No! Maybe… Seductive Ambiguity in Dance Theatre Performance (Routledge 2006).
Between 2003-2013 I was Director of BA & MA Choreography at Dartington College of Arts and during the merger with Falmouth University I played a major role in developing the dance and choreography courses.
Over the past few years choreographic projects have taken me to Auckland, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Berlin, Helsinki and Beirut.
Alongside my work as a professor and choreographer, I have a private psychotherapy practice in London.PhD Dance Studies
MSc Gestalt Psychotherapy
MA Performing Arts
SFHEA
My research interweaves the fields of choreography, movement practices, queer studies and Gestalt existential philosophy and psychology.
Choreography and performance research is grounded in the here and now uncertainty of relational practices and processes between performers, performers and makers and performers and audiences.
