Biography

Herbert is an Associate Professor of Mental Health and a Senior teaching fellow in the School of life and Health Sciences. He leads a team of mental health nurse academics in the planning and delivery of pre and post reg Mental Health programmes, including CPD. Herbert 's teaching and research interests focus on best practice relating to parity of esteem, with reference to improving physical health outcomes in SMI, appropriate, safe, and effective use of psychopharmacological agents, and recovery approaches. He has worked in various Higher Education and NHS settings, including General practice, secondary and primary care services. He is a specialist clinical advisor to the CQC, supporting with inspections of community and hospital MH settings. He sits on His Majesty's Courts and Tribunal Service- The First Tier-Mental Health Review Tribunal as a Specialist Panel Member. He is an editorial board member for the British of Journal of Mental Health Nursing and an External Examiner at Bournemouth University on a range of CPD modules. He is a Peer reviewer for various journals including Mental Health Practice (RCNi).

Herbert is a co-director and lead for Education and Training for a CIC diaspora Health association, Uganda Nurses, and Midwives Association UK

Past/current project work which involves training and consultancy

  1.  As a specialist advisor and member of the CQC inspectorate and, His Majesty’s First Tier Mental Health Tribunal Service- I help to provide specialist advice on matters relating to mental health care in  primary and acute services, including quality review of routine care systems, responsiveness to patient care, risk assessment and management in mental health settings.

  2. Previously as  CPD programme leader  at Middlesex University, I was responsible for CPD provision planning and delivery in the Department of Mental Health. Leading on CPD consultancy work with partnerships, planning and implementing CPD engagement activities with external stake holder and collaborating with NHS and private provider to unertake training needs analysis which helped feed into their work force development planning. 
  3. From 2013-2015, I led on consultancy work on the PMS + Mental health Project, funded by NHSE in City and Hackney, the main remit of this work was aimed at transforming systems and pathways in primary care, concerning improving access to mental health assessment and support in various GP practices which were involved in this project. 
  4. 2015-2019:  Medication Awareness project lead - A partnership between Middlesex University and  (Barnet, Haringey, and Enfield mental health professionals-BEH)- Training mental health professionals on medicine management and optimisation in psychiatric settings. Approximate total income generated in 2015-2017 was £15000
  5. 2015-2020: Consultancy work involving planning and delivery of CPD related activities across various partner NHS Trusts. These activities generated a total income of £135,107 for the institution (Middlesex University)

  • 2022-todate: Invited guest-speaker on monthly Podcast that spotlights health issues of concern to society and/or specific communities. - Prime Focus: MedicaGlobalWorks.

 

Notable Achievements

2018: Student led teaching awards-Herbert was nominated the most inspiring lecturer by mental health nursing students

2020: Awarded Santander Universities Work-Based Learning Award worth £5000 (October 2020) to progress Doctoral research project looking at MHNs’ Cardiometabolic risk recording monitoring practices in psychiatric inpatient wards.

2024: Nominated for an award for 'Outstanding Contributions to Community through excellent innovative work and creativity, dedication and commitment to education and training. "UK-UG Diaspora Community Champions Awards"
