Personal profile

Iain Johnston-White obtained his BA (Honours) at the University of Stirling before completing his MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining Roehampton, he taught at Sciences Po Paris and Aberystwyth University.

Research projects

Iain Johnston-White works on the British Empire and warfare in the twentieth century, with particular focus on the two world wars. Most recently, he is researching social, economic and political changes that occurred in colonial port cities during the Second World War.

He is interested in questions relating to empire, war, national and imperial identities, colonial development and the movement of populations in empire. His previous work, The British Commonwealth and Victory in the Second World War, called for a reorientation in how we understand British grand strategy in the early years of the Second World War, placing the dominions centre stage. It explored the symbiotic nature of the dominion-metropole relationships and concluded that actions were not fundamentally altruistic, or even sentimental, but rather founded upon mutual self-interest.

Iain welcomes enquiries from applicants for graduate study interested in the two world wars, colonial conflicts or questions of imperial identities.
