Biography

Dr Julie Shaughnessy is a Principal Lecturer in the Department of Education and also the Programme Director of Professional Doctorate in Education. She was a primary school teacher prior to entering higher education.

A central component of Julie's work has been to draw together research and practice in teacher education with specific focus on pedagogy. She has undertaken research in areas related to behaviour and violence , bullying, exclusion, social justice and teacher development. Her current project focuses on pedagogy in Higher Education and supervisory practice.

Julie has been involved in a range of national and international research networks, examples of which include:

  • Establishing the UK Observatory (UKO) for the Promotion of Non-Violence. as a national initiative committed to addressing the key issues of aggression, bullying, anti-social behaviour and violence, and improving the emotional health and well-being of children and young people - www.ukobservatory.com
  • Completing large scale research projects with national and international bodies; for example, Womankind Worldwide and Birmingham Local Authority
  • Presenting at national and international conferences e.g. Department for Education and International forums on violence in schools.
  • Consultancy projects with - European Union, Department for Education and Skills, UNICEF and the NSPCC.
  • Outside of University life Julie enjoys working with charities to support young people's
