Biography

I joined Roehampton in August 2013. Previously I was Head of the School of Classics at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David; and before that Director of the Institute of Classical Studies in the University of London, and Professor of Classics at Queen Mary, University of London. I am President of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric (2015-2017); and a Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Classical Studies.

Research interests

Classical oratory and rhetoric, in particular the speeches of the Attic Orators and Greek rhetorical theory. I am also interested in biography (I have published on Plutarch) and Latin poetry (I recently collaborated on a three-volume edition of Statius).

Research projects

I am currently running a project on Greek rhetorical manuals, which I started while at the ICS. I am working on an Oxford Text of the orator Isaios and a commentary on Aeschines 3. I am co-editing the Oxford Handbook to Quintilian.

Teaching

Classical Greek political, social, economic and legal history; Cicero; Greek and Latin Literature; Greek and Latin.

I am currently Head of Department. When teaching, I offer courses on Athens (first year), Sparta (second year) and Demosthenes and the Rhetoric of Power (third year), Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as Dissertations and MRes sessions.
