Robert Manderson

After graduation from the University of Dundee in Scotland, Robert took up his first post as a Software Engineer - analysis, programming / coding, testing and maintenance - within the Computer-Aided Engineering Systems Department at BAE Systems Military Aircraft Division (formerly British Aerospace) based at Warton Aerodrome, Lancashire, in the north west of England. Within the organisation, he worked in the Technical Directorate on large-scale, high-technology and state-of-the-art software systems (projects) used by design and production line colleagues supporting the computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacture (CAM) of aircraft systems, including: the multi-billion pounds (GBP) Al Yamamah Project, and the multi-billion pounds (GBP) UK Government & Pan-European Project (including Germany's Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, and Italy's Airitalia, as partners).

He is currently a senior lecturer in the University of Roehampton Business School teaching in the areas of analysing information and data for problem solving, project management and business research. He has also taught in the areas of creative technologies in business, and knowledge management topics concerned with the support of business functions of organisations.

Robert is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a PRINCE2 Registered Practitioner.

He is a member of the British Academy of Management, the BAE Systems Employee & Alumni Network and the Oxford University Software Engineering Programme.

Robert is regularly invited to contribute real-world case studies to prestigious text-book titles designed for students and faculty of business schools, and has been invited to join various research conferences as a paper reviewer and programme committee member.

He is currently an external examiner in IT and Business Management at York Business School, York (2020 - 2024).

Robert was until recently an external examiner at two other UK HEFCE-funded universities in the areas of research methods, research dissertations, and achieving corporate success, at Glyndwr University Business School (MBA Programme), and also at the University of West London in the areas of data and knowledge management (BSc Programme).

At University of West London, he was an external validation panel member involved in reviewing and approving Foundation Level, Level 4, Level 5 and Level 6 modules across a suite of new undergraduate programmes, developed between the Business School and the Computing School. The modules included: Business Accounting for Managers, Business Operations Management, and Business Development Group Project.

He welcomes project or dissertation proposals from undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of:

-Financial Technology (FINTECH), especially in the areas of regulatory oversight and control in the UK (Financial Conduct Authority) and overseas jurisdictions (e.g. Singapore - Monetary Authority of Singapore), and risk management using 'Big Data' and 'Cloud' app technology solutions.

-Tax and offshore tax havens, especially in relation to ethical issues.

-IT / app technology innovation in business, especially in the British aerospace industry sector.

-Legacy business technology issues in the banking sector and how these affect consumer confidence and trust.

-Business project management and PRINCE2 / Agile methodologies.

-Student employability and social media (e.g. Linkedin).

All of Robert Manderson's research, teaching and consultancy activities are informed by professional practitioner experience in industry, and teaching & research experience in UK universities. In industry, he has worked as a full-time, permanently contracted software engineer at BAE Systems - military aircraft division (formerly British Aerospace) at Warton, Lancashire, developing, evolving and managing changes to computer-aided design and manufacturing information systems.

In the universities, he has worked as a full-time, contracted research associate (RA) at Lancaster University and then as a full-time, contracted RA at Manchester University. He was appointed by, and worked for, Professor Ian Sommerville at Lancaster University (now Emeritus at St. Andrews University) and Professor Paul Layzell at Manchester University (now Emeritus at Royal Holloway, University of London). The RA post at Lancaster was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). and the RA post at Manchester by British Telecommunications (BT Plc).

Robert Manderson FHEA, MBCS, MIET, MInstP, AMIMA is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is a PRINCE2 Registered Practitioner. He holds professional grade memberships of The British Computer Society (incorporated by Royal Charter) (MBCS), The Institution of Engineering and Technology (incorporated by Royal Charter) (MIET), and The Institute of Physics (incorporated by Royal Charter) (MInstP). He also holds an associate membership of The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (incorporated by Royal Charter) (AMIMA).

Robert Manderson is interested in all aspects of the research of information and communication technologies (ICT), especially in relation to new, and emerging, technologies (e.g. the Cloud and Big Data) that may have the potential to enhance information systems in the business organisation context, including: all aspects of the Digital Economy, Business & Industry, and Education in the form of virtual learning environments (VLEs), including Second Life and e-resources. He is currently involved in projects which seek to better understand e-resource user behaviour, and the role of social media in university students' employability. He has teaching as well as research interests across a range of computing, information systems, software engineering and ICT issues in both education and business settings. His engagement with these issues has been practical as well as theoretical and across a broad spectrum of approaches, including 'hard' technical computing and the application of 'soft' education and social science methodologies. Some of his work is being funded externally by the Higher Education Academy (HEA), and has, in the past, been funded by internal university grants involving collaborations with colleagues, including the School of Education, with Professor Mike Watts (now at Brunel University), and the RED Centre (now the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Unit). He contributes to the discussion of research and teaching issues in national and international forums through professional organisations such as The British Computer Society and The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Robert Manderson teaches or supervises in the areas of Analysing Information and Data for Problem Solving, Business Research, Business Projects, Creative Environment (Adobe Creative Cloud - CS6: Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign), PRINCE2 & Project Management. He is also very experienced in the teaching (or supervision) of areas including Management Information Systems / Information Systems Management & Development, Software Engineering and ICT, especially in relation to Informations Systems' Software Requirements and Information Systems' Software Evolution and Maintenance; Information Systems, Software Engineering and ICT Education - including e-Learning and e-Teaching, the role of ICT in students' learning, Computer-Supported Cooperative Working (CSCW), Computer Assisted Learning (CAL), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) - including Extraordinary HCI for severely physically disabled people.
