Biography

Dr Sam Thrower completed his PhD in Sport Psychology at Loughborough University in 2016. His doctoral thesis was titled: ‘The Development of a Psychosocial Parent Education Programme for British Tennis’. Since graduating Sam has worked as a Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Psychology at Kingston University (2016-2017) and as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Loughborough University (2017-2018). Sam joined the University of Roehampton in June 2018 and currently teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Sport & Exercise Psychology and Research Methods.

Research interests

Dr Sam Thrower is predominantly a qualitative researcher, although he has conducted research as part of interdisciplinary teams using both quantitative and mixed-method designs. His main research interests lie in the area of youth sport and specifically the psychosocial development of young athletes. He is particularly interest in topics such as parenting in sport, sport-confidence, motivational climates, stress and coping, and anti-doping in sport. His research in these areas has been published in a range of leading international journals including: ‘Psychology of Sport & Exercise’, ‘Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise & Health’, ‘Sport, Exercise & Performance Psychology’, ‘Journal of Applied Sport Psychology’ and ‘Frontiers in Psychology’. Sam’s current research focuses on parent-child interactions and the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based sport parent education programmes.

Sam has provided consultancy services to the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Youth Sport Trust (YST), and most notably the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Teaching

Sam is currently module convenor for ‘Introduction to Sport & Exercise Psychology’ (Level 1), 'Research Methods for Sport & Exercise Science' (Level 2), ‘ MSc/MRes Research Dissertation’. He also contributes to ‘Good Science’ (Level 1), ‘Applied Sport & Exercise Science’ (Level 2), ‘Psychology of Peak Performance’ (Level 2), ‘Advanced Topics in Psychology’ (Level 3), ‘Exercise & Health’ (Level 3), ‘Psychology of Sport and Performance’ (MSc), and ‘Research Methods’ (MSc).
