Personal profile

Biography

Dr Tivkaa Amande is a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and Programme Leader for the MSc Advanced Biomedical Science at the University of Roehampton, London. He has over 15 years of experience in biomedical science teaching, research, programme leadership, and postgraduate supervision. He is a member of the Food Security Advisory Group of the Applied Microbiology International and Member of the Royal Society of Biology.

His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), host–microbe interactions, microbial ecology, and pathogen adaptation. His work integrates microbiology, molecular biology, genomics, metagenomics, clinical bioinformatics, and public health to investigate disease processes and identify opportunities for improved diagnostics, surveillance, prevention, and therapeutic intervention. His current research interests include novel therapeutic strategies, approaches to combat antimicrobial resistance, clinical bioinformatics, and the evolution and adaptation of microbial populations in clinical, environmental, and community settings.

Research projects

Research interests

  • Antimicrobial Resistance & Infectious Diseases: Molecular mechanisms of AMR, multidrug resistance, pathogen transmission, infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, and infectious disease pathogenesis.
  • Microbial Genomics & Bioinformatics: Whole-genome sequencing, comparative genomics, metagenomics, AMR gene detection, pathogen surveillance, and integration of genomic and clinical data.
  • Medical & Clinical Microbiology: Clinical diagnostics, host–pathogen interactions, microbial adaptation, infectious disease epidemiology, and translational microbiology.
  • Molecular & Cellular Mechanisms: Microbial virulence, stress adaptation, gene expression, metabolic pathways, and molecular mechanisms underlying disease.
  • Environmental & One Health Microbiology: Environmental reservoirs and transmission of pathogens and AMR, with a focus on water, food, environmental microbiology, and human health.
