Abstract

Exhibition is always an important installation in society. Its aims, contents,
modes, themes, approaches and other details reflect the complicated interaction
of the tangible and intangible dimensions including power, knowledge and
techniques. It illustrates peoples’ world views and self-portrait. This paper
intends to demonstrate the example of Taketomi Island in Okinawa, in which the
cultural exhibition is different from the object-centered mode in museums.
Combining attention and effort from the Nation and Islanders, it centers on social
processes and penetrates into everyday interaction, especially among tourists
with cultural interest, through both traditional mechanisms and contemporary
strategies. Based on ethnographic analyses, the author intends to explore the
ideals, contents, institutions and models of cultural exhibition in the Island in
order to manifest how this social process reflect the negotiation, related cultural
discourse and production of self-identity of the community.
