'A disgrace to the neighbourhood' or 'A greatly wronged woman'? Sexual violation and criminal lunacy: the personal experience of Elizabeth Platts, 1881-1885

    Abstract

    Alison Pedley probes the experiences of one
    Derbyshire woman, Elizabeth Platts. The complexities
    of this case, which included trial and imprisonment for
    a savage attack perpetrated following a sexual assault;
    alcohol abuse and mental health issues; and rehabilitation
    in Broadmoor, reveal a host of conflicting cultural and
    social attitudes that faced English women at this time as
    well as how they fared within the criminal justice system.
