    Abstract

Tina Beattie evaluates the significance of Francis's papacy with regard to the roles and representation of women in the Church. Situating her analysis in the context of Catholic tradition and teaching, she argues that Francis has done little to improve the status of women in Catholic institutions, and that he perpetuates romantic stereotypes that fail to represent the complex realities of women's lives. She also addresses problems associated with the exclusion of women from the sacramental priesthood.
