Abstract

In this chapter we provide a brief overview of the cells and mechanisms involved in mediating adaptive immunity. We review T cell development and effector functions, with a focus on how T cell dysfunction contributes to pathology in pediatric rheumatological conditions. We also discuss B cell development and effector functions, including antibody and cytokine production and their contributions to immune dysregulation. Finally, we discuss antigen presentation via MHC class I and class II, which acts as a bridge between T and B cell responses, with a focus on potential therapeutic targets.
