Abstract

Being part of the hot topic presentation ''Listening to children and young people about contemporary political issues: Lessons from the Brian Simon Awards on Democracy and Education'' for BERA conference 2024, this BERA funded research project was conducted via workshops, informal interviews, and journalling with child participants and their parents in Wokingham Borough Council, England. This presentation focuses on children’s perspectives. This research shows that there was strong recognition among the child participants about the importance of sustainability whilst they faced the economic, educational, social and political issues. Child participants shared their experience and understanding of an eco-community and just society in the context of their local borough. This research addresses the importance of working with child participants as crucial part of community engagement in developing a shared understanding about both challenges and inspirations involved in addressing key issues they have faced and in co-constructing a just eco-community for humanity and the planet (Robertson, 2003). This brings meaningful insights into pressing local community issues, especially in the context of post-election.
