Discourse analysis: a possible solution

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

One of the joys of exploring the interview data outlined above is the range of different perspectives which can be brought to bear upon them. Thus unlike experimental results, whose interpretation is constrained by the initial guiding hypothesis, the interview transcripts are amenable to a variety of analyses which may address, develop or challenge the concerns which prompted the research. The particular discourse analytic approach which I seek to outline may well develop and challenge some of the initial interests behind the research, in particular it questions the notion of using the interview transcripts to “get at” or refer to something outside of the text itself, such as inner mental states. Instead, discourse analysis encourages us to pay close attention to the detail and context of the discourse and to be sensitive to the constructive and functional aspects of the interview dialogue.
