Abstract
This Chapter aims to explore the historical, theological and ecclesial organisational factors that led to the emergence of Ghanaian IPCs. This part of my research project is important for several reasons. Firstly, it will present a critical review of the literature on the main issues, concepts and arguments related to the roots of Ghanaian independent Pentecostal churches. This will also identify gaps in existing research and provide a rationale for this study. Secondly, it will set the framework for the rest of the study by outlining the main hypotheses and research objectives related to the causes of IPCs in Ghana. It will contextualise my overall research question and highlight important issues and debates about IPCs that I seek to answer through my fieldwork in Ghana. The study also highlight the significance of colonialism and traditional religion in Ghana for IPC origins. Political unrest and urbanisation led to a revival of Ghanaian culture that turns out to have been significant for the values of the emerging IPCs. In particular, the IPCs have demonstrated a commitment to the development of Ghana's socio-economic system, particularly in the areas of education, health and well-being, and climate action. The chapter thus provides important background for this intriguing aspect of IPC practice and teaching, which is the focus of the empirical research that follows, and the thesis as a whole more broadly.
