Abstract
As a starting chapter for part I ‘Whose values are defining me’, this chapter begins with academic reflection on our work in higher education driven by neoliberalism, followed by our discussion of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on children’s lives via narratives and observations from own experience and existing research. This chapter focuses on the context of young children constructing and developing their identities in the process of joggling all aspects involved in their childhood experiences. We consider time, space, challenges and tensions arising from the socio-cultural, economic, environmental and political domains involved in the processes of children maintaining their motivations and dispositions whilst developing their sense of self in relation to others through relationships and interactions in families, groups, early childhood settings, communities and the wider world.
