Abstract
Although Kipling and Yeats were born in the same year (1865), were first published in London in the same newspaper, shared an early patron, and sparred in the political arena, no previous book has united them within a single frame of reference. Bringing these two enemies—as they eventually became—into intimacy has surprised, even shocked, specialists of either author. For me, such reactions indicate the book’s disruptive potential to reshape our understanding of the two writers’ identities and motivations, and to show how British imperialism and Irish nationalism could share the same discursive ground and employ analogous rhetorical strategies.
