Abstract

Commissioned by BCMG in 1996, Play was first performed by BCMG, conducted by Sakari Oramo, at the CBSO Centre in 1999. The original has been performed a number of times subsequently and 20 years on I decided I liked the idea of the piece –an interplay of soloists, ensembles, the roles within a small community of players-that I would begin tweaking with it. The tweaks led to the entire re-composition of the piece that emerged as chamber concerto proper. The solos were extended, becoming interludes between sections, the melodic material intertwining more explicitly than previously and the structure is more obvious than before. Re-visiting the music after 20 years allowed me to re-think all aspects of the composition and whilst there are traits that link the two pieces together, there are many more differences, as one would, quite possibly, assume.
