Abstract
This chapter investigated distributions of wealth and poverty making use of both the returns published in the Norfolk and Norwich hearth tax edition, and a series of account documents which were recently discovered in the uncatalogued part of The National Archives E 179 files. It also used detailed investigation of vernacular architecture to draw out unexpected differences in wealth and poverty and proposed a new model for understanding the disappearance of the middling sort from north Nofolk (cf. Longcroft et al.)
