Abstract
This is an essay dealing with the close influence of other writers on my writing practice. Discussing the novelist Brigid Brophy, the poet CA Conrad and the playwright Mojisola Adebayo, the essay examines the relationship between subjectivity, intersectionality and innovation in UK and US literature. The piece avoids the conventional critical or biographical essay form, but rather breaks new ground in terms of what an essay might be and could do.
