Abstract

In Unearthing Spirituality: Through the Arts, Gavin Mart explores the transformative role of the arts in uncovering spirituality and fostering meaningful connections in a fragmented, postmodern world. He presents artistic expression as a bridge between the sacred and secular, capable of transcending cultural and linguistic barriers where traditional religious language often falters.

Mart links imagination to divine revelation, arguing that creativity reflects God’s nature and offers glimpses of the transcendent. Through practical examples like community art projects and storytelling, he demonstrates how the arts can evoke spiritual encounters and foster sacredness in everyday life.

Acknowledging resistance within traditional church structures, Mart calls for a broader imagination to embrace the arts as vital tools for mission and worship. He emphasises cultural sensitivity and the importance of engaging with local traditions, urging pioneers to discern the Spirit’s presence in diverse expressions. Ultimately, he positions the arts as essential pathways to encountering God and enriching spiritual practice in contemporary contexts.
